Most (if not all) the US zip codes have been registered…and after checking, the trend of registering zip codes / postcodes started quite a while ago, even here in China. Would probably wise for you to register your postcode domain, esp. if your business / office resides in that particular postcode.

So I’ve decided to provide a list of available Shanghai post codes which, to my knowledge begins from 200000 and I’m not sure where it stops.

A New Objective!

The other day, I was reading something about a guy who admired 3-letter domain owners…not only because these domains are expensive but because these domains are rare.  So here I am, squeezing every dime I have to buy as many 4 letter domains because they’re still affordable when I should be working my arse off so I can buy at least one LLL.com.

Right now I don’t have a clue how I’m going to somehow get almost $10′000 (pocket money) for one of the cheapest LLL.com out there.  I’ve just added it to my “long-term goals” list.

Although, if I freed a genie today and he gave me only one wish I’d probably ask for more hours in one day.  I can’t stand the whole 24hrs crap, esp. since many of us spend more than 5hrs a day sleeping.

Last year, I registered seychellespeople.com.  Mainly because I know that there will be more people searching for “Seychelles People” than there would be for “Seychellois” or “Seychelloise”.  I’m sure I mentioned this before: the only people who knows that we’re called “Seychellois” are the Seychellois themselves.

I just found out, that “Seychelles People” in the domain industry scores higher than the following:

Seychelles Travel
North Island Seychelles
Seychelles Honeymoon
Seychelles Realty
Seychelles Hotel
Seychelles Holiday
Vacation Seychelles
Seychelles Vacation
Seychelles Telecom
Seychelles Travel Agency
Visit Seychelles
Seychelles Honeymoons
Seychelles Traveler
Seychelles Safari
Seychelles Planners
Seychelles Planner
Seychelles Travelers
Seychelles Islands Hotels

I was considering dropping the domain name this year or selling it but now I’ve decided to keep & develop it into something simple (well, I have other projects so tough).

The Scramble for .ASIA Domains

The following post was in the drafts folder for a few days now.

After selling a few domains, I managed to register a few pretty cool .asia domains, which I feel will do better than .cn for obvious reasons. The funny thing about the domain industry is that there’s always a hype at some point. You’re either in or out, and both decisions are risks anyway because you either win or lose. Here’s more info on .asia from ICANN: http://www.icann.org/tlds/stld-apps-19mar04/asia.htm

A few months ago when I got into the domaining hobby, there was this 4L.com hype going on that didn’t really make any practical sense to me. So I ignored the hype. Sometime around early November, I received news that the 4Ls had been completely sold out. It felt like there was a treasure chest full of gold right outside my door that I chose to ignore and all of a sudden someone passed by one night and took it all away.

I bought a few 4Ls a few weeks later, for double their reg fee (less than $20). Then there was the $90 one that I already mentioned. Since then, I hadn’t bought a single 4L domain. I had a bit of cash to spare today ($200 to be exact) so I thought…what should I do with it? I could go shopping for a few household items and food. But then I decided to invest it on 4Ls.

To my surprise, I couldn’t find anything for less than $45! Even the most horrible letter combinations anyone can possibly think of were being sold above $40. Which could only mean one thing: their prices are definitely increasing….and investing on them would be a smart thing to do.

I made a deal to buy 5 in bulk, so the reseller agreed to give me a discount. They weren’t even that bad…in fact, I love them already. I’m going to hold on to these domains until I have more time in my hands to develop them all. So I now have 10 LLLL.coms and 1 NLLL.com…and over 40 domains in total.

That’s a lot of work for me if I intend to develop everything.

January - February Holiday Update

The SEO-related site is up, I’ve decided to use a $90 domain name that I had bought from a reseller last November (2007). It’s a pretty cool 4-letter domain so let’s hope I use it well. I did however, buy 2 additional .coms yesterday. I’ll be using them as redirects to the SEO-related site. I’ll link to the site as soon as I start adding contents to it.

That said, what’s up with me? We’re on holidays now…I’ve played hardcore truancy this past year so I’ll have to keep my fingers crossed about them letting me off. I’m probably going to have to retake the HSK this July…and I have to do really, really well if I want to re-earn my dignity around here. LOL. I’ve been “laying low” & doing my own thing for quite some time now. Because I’ve decided to take on that personal challenge (doing the HSK this year) I have several decisions to make:

What will happen to my domain names? Should I auction them off and just forget the whole domain thing? If I carry on domaining, will my studies suffer (well d-uh)?

But the decision I’ve made is to hold on to my domain names (so I’ll have to pay renewal fees). If it’s something I’ve learnt in my 4-months short experience in this field is that domainers usually regret selling their first few domains. It’s because they sold their stuff without understanding the value of their commodity. At this point in time, when generic or short & catchy domain names are either rarely available or downright costly you have to handle your investments with care. Domaining is a fast-paced industry…what’s too common today might be a valued possession tomorrow…just like the 4Ls (my personal prediction).

Work aside, I might be doing some travelling this holiday. I don’t really want to but the opportunity of doing so comes only twice a year. So I’ll be going up north to where Div is. I’m hoping to do some ice-skating and / or skiing. Will be constantly updating my blog though…they do have internet access there you know. *rolls eyes*

What do you go for when you’re about to choose your domain name? Would you rather choose something really generic, or something completely new…perhaps a word that doesn’t even exist yet?

Choosing a domain name is KEY when you’re starting a website as far as I know.

If you’re going for something more personal or introducing something unique, then anything brand-able is a good idea. So if it turns out to be something really popular then the brand is 100% yours because it’s a word/brand you invented.

In other cases however, choosing a generic name would be a good idea: and the shorter URL, the better.

As we move on to life where everyone owns at least one website, the one-word generic URLs have all been taken (thus their resale value has increased unimaginably).

For example,
If you were selling chairs you could easily register chairs.tld (I will not use .com for this example).

But you find out that chair.tld has been taken. So you think of an alternative word for chair. You try to register ’seats.tld’ but it’s been taken. So today, this is exactly what has happened…if you want to register a domain name at its reg fee price (about $8 for a .com) you will have to settle for 2 or 3 generic names put together like chairseat.tld.

The advantage is this: anyone who searches for “seat” might end up at your site. Likewise, anyone who searches for “chair” might also end up at your site. However, your HUGE disadvantage is this: anyone who searches for “seat” will most likely visit seat.tld, and the same thing for chair.tld. So you are faced with fierce competition from these 1-word generic domain names.

I guess this is the question you have to ask yourself: is it worth trying to buy the name you want from the person who already owns it?

My personal answer would be: if you can afford it, go for it, especially if you’re opening a business-related site that you know will be successful. ;) This might just be a worthwhile investment.

What happens if you “go for it” and your business plummets to the ground right before your eyes? Well, if it’s a really good generic word, then you’re bound to be able to sell it…and if you’re really good at negotiations, you might even be able to make a profit.

Domain names is a multi-billion dollar industry. Choosing your domain name is potentially a multi-billion dollar decision.

Title pretty much says it all. So if anyone’s interested in joining, head over to the link below:

To read what it’s all about. Briefly though, the contests begins on the 1st of February 2008, and they’re only letting 300 people sign-up for the contest.

Should be quite interesting to see what the SEO experts can do. :) Good luck!

LOL I’m not even a member of that forum so I have no idea why I’m advertising the contest. :S
