Naivety Costs!

In MOST cases, when someone offers you a “free domain”, there’s usually a catch. Obviously, there are certain situations where you’re really given the domain for free, but it’s really seldom and you should try to find out HOW they’re able to give it to you for free (most people are not THAT generous…).
A few weeks ago when my friends was asking me about domains & having their own website, I was shocked about their their naivety. There’s nothing wrong with that, especially because they never really had any interest before but I was shocked because had they not approached me before they paid for anything, having their own website would have costed them a whole lot more than it should.
One friend said that a dot com in her country costs $100. I was surprised so I said “what? No way…are you sure?” Then I told her “I think the person selling it could be cheating you guys…” and her reply was that a dot com really costs that much in her country. A few seconds later, I told her that you should be able to get it for about $5-$10 and she didn’t really know what to say after that. So I continued, “wow…the guy’s getting a $90+ dollar profit…nice!”
Today, I’m going to share 2 tips when you’re looking to put up your own website:
1 - When you see a service site that’s been “designed” like this: http://darikweitzel.com/hosting.html (i.e. crappy) and the person writes something like this:
“All the sites that I build for free (*incl. free domain name), I will be hosting them at $25.00 per month. This fee is the only fee that will be charging at a monthly/yearly rate. This is a normal fee that all web site users have to pay to have a company to host their site. This will pay for the bandwidth and maintenance to the server along with upgrades every year.”
and:
“Unlimited Bandwidth = Free Unlimited”
CLOSE THE WINDOW OF THE SITE AND MOVE ON!
This is because:
- “website users” don’t pay $25 every month to get a company to host their site. In fact, anyone who REALLY knows how to put up a website (let alone a non-fraudulent business) should know the most cost-efficient way to have their site hosted a whole lot less than $25 a month.
- maintenance to the server along with upgrades every year? LOL…anyone who can spend $25 a month to get their small html site hosted can actually AFFORD their own server.
2 - Do your research before you click on “buy now”.
People like that frustrate me, they underestimate others…but the worst thing is that they’re right, “there’s a sucker is born every minute”
Assuming the guy was actually serious about making sites for people…a site like his would probably cost someone $3 - $10. Purely out of “labour”, because you can actually get better templates (but not custom-made) for free.
Hosting a small site should cost you more or less $5 a month, depending on the additional features provided.
